[ARCHIVED] Keeping Roosevelt Island Beautiful

Island in Bloom 2

It’s been more than 30 days since the first day of Spring and last weekend’s long-awaited return of clear, sunny skies signals that the weather has finally caught up with the calendar.

For Roosevelt Island that means its more than 19 acres of landscaping areas are in bloom and are being cut, edged, curbed and pruned. An arborist is checking the health of the trees, grass is being fertilized, colorful flowers are attracting bees.

Alonza Robertson, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation’s (RIOC) public information officer is reminding Islanders to please not litter and dog owners to clean up after their pets.

“We’re focusing greater attention on the cleanliness of all Island areas,” Roberson said, “including maintenance of high traffic areas.” The U Arias Corporation, a local landscaping company, was recently awarded a 10-month, $197,576 contract to help augment RIOC’s ground crews three days each week and help ensure the Island is in excellent condition.

“And because the dogs can’t do it themselves, we want all pet owners to take responsibility for their dog's waste,” he added. “It is the law.”

Also in the New York City dog ownership law, is the requirement all dogs in public on Roosevelt Island must remain on a leash that is no more than six feet long. Owners who refuse to comply with the law can face mandatory fines up to $75 per incident.

RIOC ground crews have replaced and installed more garbage collection cans in key Island areas and are encouraging residents to use them to dispose of their trash including cigarette butts instead of Island planters.

“Springtime is a great time to live and visit Roosevelt Island,” Robertson said. “Let’s make sure we all do our part and contribute to keeping it beautiful for everyone to enjoy.”
