[ARCHIVED] Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation Announces Island-Wide Beautification Plans

Roosevelt Island Horticulture and Landscaping Design Initiative

Their Horticultural and Landscape Design Initiative will enhance, elevate, and diversify the island

ROOSEVELT ISLAND, NY, Jun. 12, 2021 – Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC) announced today their Horticultural and Landscape Design Initiative which will enhance the iconic island’s natural beauty and elevate its unparalleled views through sustainable landscapes and the use of native vegetation.

Kicking off on Roosevelt Island Day, a day that has always been one of celebration and renewal for this idyllic island, the Horticultural and Landscape Design Initiative is comprised of eight phases starting with the west promenade, which runs parallel to Manhattan’s emblematic Midtown skyline. This first phase will enhance these breathtaking views by opening the sightline, and revitalizing and expanding the lawns that line the path.

“There is so much to celebrate this year as New York and Roosevelt Island begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Shelton J. Haynes, President and CEO of RIOC. “This initiative represents our community’s ability to grow through hard times and come back stronger and better than ever as we reawaken to the vibrant and engaging island we know and love.”

The subsequent phases of this initiative will beautify areas including the fountain at Tramway Plaza, Firefighter’s Field, and areas along Main Street.

“Roosevelt Island is rich in history and we want to make sure we naturally enhance that richness, said Matthew Kibby, Director of Landscaping and Horticultural at RIOC. “Each phase of the initiative will diversity the species of plants, flowers, and trees that we have as well as upgrade the overall Roosevelt Island experience.”

The Horticultural and Landscape Design Initiative is expected to run through 2022. Follow RIOC on their social media channels for updates as each phase begins, progresses, and reaches completion.
