[ARCHIVED] Today is Domestic Violence Awareness Day

Re-Introducing RIOC - Domestic Violence Day

At the most recent meeting of RIRA's Public Safety Committee, Chief Brown discussed that domestic abuse incidents are unfortunately on the rise on Roosevelt Island. PSD is currently exploring ways it can help combat this troubling problem. Domestic Violence is not just a problem here on Roosevelt Island, but across the country.

One in three women and one in four men experience physical abuse by their partners. Every minute in the United States, twenty people are victims of domestic violence. Every year, five million children witness domestic violence. Domestic violence causes women to lose eight million work days annually. Forty-four percent of lesbian women and twenty-six percent of gay men have experienced physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please call 1-800-942-6906 for support at any time of day or night. If you or someone you know is being assaulted on Roosevelt Island, please contact PSD immediately at 212-832-4545. And you can always call 911 if necessary.
